The Porsche 911 was an evolution of the 964, and this car was special because it was the last of the air-cooled 911s, originally introduced back in 1964. Many enthusiasts and collectors consider the 993 to be the best of the air-cooled 911 Series, agreeing that Porsche got it right with this ideal mixture of technology and classic 911. Porsche itself refers to the 993 as “a significant advance, not just from a technical, but also a visual perspective”.
Along with the revised bodywork, the 993 also featured an all-new multilink rear suspension that improved the car's road-holding qualities and handling. This type of rear suspension, along with chassis refinements, enabled the car to keep up with the competitors.
Engine capacity remained at 3.6 litres, but power rose to 272 hp thanks to better engine management and exhaust design, and beginning with model year 1996 power increased to 285 hp. The 993 from 1996 was the first Porsche to début variable-length intake and the so-called Variocam (variable valve management) system. This improved high-rpm power production and low-rpm torque, and the system was one of the first of its kind to be used on production vehicles.
From 1996 to 1998, a limited number of Targa models were produced with a large glass roof that slid under the rear window.
