911/996 Turbo

Geschichte

Swedish sold from new, fully-stamped service book, attractive black / black color combination: With a manual gearbox like this, the 996 Turbo is well on its way to achieve recognition in classic Porsche circles.

Turbos have always been the top model in the Porsche 911 program - and therefore always very fast cars.

So is the 911 Turbo of the 996-ilk, but the 996 is more than raw speed: It was also the first truly modern Porsche 911, which, with its finely developed four-wheel drive managed both everyday driving and track days as well as much more expensive supercars.

Those qualities are getting recognized now, and good manual 996 Turbos have shot up in price recently.

Model history:

Porsche introduced a completely new 911, the 996, in 1997. The new water-cooled engine was necessary for several reasons, including noise reduction, environmental considerations, expectations for more sophistication and a high-performance engine with four valves per cylinder. Other major modifications included a completely new platform with a slimmer body, a more vertical windscreen and a redesigned interior.

The 996 Turbo made its début at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 1999. All the models had four-wheel drive and were available with 6-speed manual transmission or 5-speed automatic Tiptronic Transmission.

The 996 had very little in common with its predecessor. It had a completely new chassis and the newly designed, water-cooled engine. Technically, it represented a major change – a complete break-away from earlier concepts.

The 996’s exterior was designed by Pinky Lai who was also responsible for the design of Porsche’s two 987s – the Boxster and the Cayman. From the very beginning, the 996 was available both as a coupé and a convertible. Initially, the car only had rear-wheel drive but a four-wheel drive option was added later.
