Gilles Villeneuve occupies a special status in Grand Prix history that exceeds mere numbers and statistics: He came second in the 1979 World Championship and scored six victories and 101 points in his career, but it was his notoriously aggressive driving style that made him a crowd favourite. He remains - with the possible exception of Ayrton Senna - the most charismatic and spectacular driver of all, gaining him status as a national hero in his home country Canada as well as Italy.
His arrival at the Scuderia in 1977 neatly coincided with the introduction of the company's new Pininfarina-styled 308 GTS model at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, and delivery of this particular example was arranged for their star signing the following year.
Chassis 21371 was the second 308 GTS ever built and early on used as a development car. It was returned to the factory for refurbishment, then posing for the official brochure. On 30 October 1978 it was registered with the Modenese registration MO 439235 and in December taken over by Gilles Villeneuve. Finished in the unusual Rosso Dino the car resided at Villeneuve’s Monaco home and was used for some seriously quick commuting to the Ferrari factory in Maranello, a distance of some 270 miles. Under normal circumstances these could be covered in just over four and a half hours. Yet the unassuming Quebecois on one memorable occasion reputedly managed it in a mere 2 hours and 25 minutes: an average speed of almost 112 miles per hour. Unbelievable perhaps, but if anyone could do it, Gilles could.
After Villeneuve's untimely death in the 1982 Belgian Grand Prix, the car was retained by Ferrari until 1984, whereupon it was sold to Michele Superbo of Modena, reputedly on the condition that he did not sell it on for 20 years. Thereafter, it passed to his wife Rosanna in 1994 until it was acquired by the vendor in 2010. On the invitation by Ferrari the car took part in an exhibition at the Museo Ferrari, Maranello, in 2012 - possibly awaiting the next invitation in 2022.
As remarkably original as if Gilles Villeneuve had just stepped out of it, having covered less than 37,000 km from new chassis 21371 represents a rare opportunity: To acquire not only a highly desirable early series 308 GTS, but the second one built and the only one with priceless association with, as Jody Scheckter so aptly put it, 'simply the fastest driver in the history of motor racing'.
With its special history this Ferrari 308 qualifies as a piece of Italian cultural heritage on par with the Sistine Chapel, the Leaning Tower of Pisa or even Coloseum - at least for Ferrari Formel-Tifosi: A classic Ferrari that served has been a company car for one af the Scuderia's most loved drivers can barely be more bettered.
