911/964 Cabriolet

Geschichte

Porsche 964 is the internal name for the Porsche 911 model manufactured and sold between 1989 and 1994. The car was designed by Benjamin Dimson in January 1986 and features significant styling revisions over previous 911 models, most prominently the more integrated bumpers. This was the first generation 911 to be offered with Porsche's Tiptronic automatic transmission and all-wheel drive as options. The four-wheel drive was called the Carrera 4.

The 964 was 85% new as compared to its predecessor, the Carrera 3.2, and the first 964s available in 1989 were four-wheel drive Carrera 4 models. Porsche did not add the rear-wheel drive Carrera 2 variant to the range until 1990. Both variants were available as a coupé, targa top or cabriolet.

A new 3.6-litre naturally aspirated engine, called the M64, was used for 964 models. Porsche substantially revised the suspension, replacing torsion bars with coil springs and shock absorbers. Power steering and ABS brakes became standard for the first time in the 964. Bumpers and fog lamps became flush with the car for better aerodynamics. A new electric spoiler lay flush with the bonnet but raised automatically at speeds above 80 km/h. In early 1990, a revised interior featured dual airbags in all North American models, followed by the European models the year after. A new automatic climate control system provided improved heating and cooling in the cabin. Revised instrumentation housed a large set of warning lights that were connected to the car's central warning system, alerting the driver to potential problems or malfunctions.

The 964 Carrera was the last generation sold with the traditional removable targa top until the 2011 991 Targa made its début.
